Greater Scottsdale cannot support the request In Text Amendment
4-TA-2020 to reduce the distance
school and a marijuana dispensary from 1500 feet to 650 feet.
This is a 57% reduction request of an
existing standard with absolutely no Public Benefit.
When medical marijuana dispensaries were
granted by the State of Arizona, the Scottsdale City Council
represented their community input by establishing the 1500 foot
distance minimum to an educational facility. COGS is
adamantly opposed to relaxing this guideline, particularly with
recreational marijuana use approved on the 2020 ballot.
Although the application identifies this
Text Amendment as “only for the Downtown Overlay”, no one is
foolish enough to not expect future marijuana dispensaries to use
this reduction as a precedent. The City of Scottsdale can
anticipate litigation from other parts of the city as more
dispensaries are permitted by the State of Arizona. The
future relocation requests by existing dispensaries should be
expected if this text amendment is approved.
